Solar cell speeds hydrogen production

    * 17:55 18 February 2008

    * By Jason Palmer

A solar cell that mimics photosynthesis has been used to make hydrogen directly from water. The prototype is inefficient, but the researchers who built it believe they can boost its efficiency, perhaps leading to a viable source of hydrogen to fuel cars and other vehicles.

The device, built by Thomas Mallouk of Pennsylvania State University and colleagues, works much like a solar cell called a Grätzel cell, using sunlight to knock electrons off dye molecules. But instead of being used to create a current, as in the Grätzel cell, the electrons are shuttled away from the dye and into a catalyst, where they split water molecules into oxygen and hydrogen ions in a reaction similar to one stage of natural photosynthesis.

Other dye-based approaches to splitting water haven’t worked very well because the electrons often recombine with the dye before they can be used. Mallouk says that the problem was a matter of arranging the molecular circuitry to channel the electrons effectively, avoiding such “short circuits”.

His solution is to attach ruthenium-based dye molecules to a catalyst particle, clinging so closely that any electrons knocked out of the dye are directed into the catalyst. “The key thing is to get everything small and individually packaged,” Mallouk told New Scientist.

In the new device, water is split a thousand times faster than in other dye-based cells.
Elegant and original

“The attractive feature of the work is that the dye is wrapped around the iridium oxide nanoparticles. This is a very elegant and original approach,” says Michael Grätzel of the Federal Institute of Technology in Lausanne, Switzerland, inventor of the Grätzel cell.

The approach may also be more promising than semiconductor approaches, which are incredibly complex, says James Durrant of Imperial College, London, UK.

Mallouk admits that so far the cell is very inefficient, as only around 1% of the light energy falling on it goes into splitting water, but he says that with some optimisation of the geometry and the molecules the efficiency could rise to 10% per cent. “Because we understand the relationship between intermolecular distances and electron transfer rates, we can in principle improve our system by changing the linking groups between molecules.”

Mallouk presented the work at a meeting of the American Association for the Advancement of Science in Boston last Sunday.

Bioprospectors Identify Hot New Biofuel-producing Bacteria

ScienceDaily (Dec. 7, 2007) — A bioprospecting expedition to Iceland’s famed hot springs has yielded new strains of bacteria with potential of producing hydrogen and ethanol fuels from wastewater now discharged from factories that process sugar beets, potatoes and other plant material.

The microbes hold potential for combining energy production with wastewater treatment, according to a new report.

In the study, Perttu E. P. Koskinen and colleagues point out that ethanol and hydrogen are two leading eco-friendly candidates for supplementing world supplies of oil, coal, and other conventional fuels. Research suggests that there would be advantages in producing those fuels by fermentation with bacteria capable of withstanding higher temperatures than microbes now in use.

Knowing that thermophilic, or heat-loving, bacteria inhabit Iceland’s hot springs, the scientists “bioprospected” scalding-hot geothermal springs in different parts of the country for new ethanol and hydrogen-producing bacteria. After screening samples, including those from springs that approached the boiling point of water, the scientists enriched promising microorganisms that can produce the compounds from glucose or cellulose at high temperatures. The enrichments included those with unusually high yields of hydrogen or ethanol from carbohydrates.

The article “Bioprospecting Thermophilic Microorganisms from Icelandic Hot Springs for Hydrogen and Ethanol Production” is scheduled for the Jan./Feb. issue of ACS’ Energy & Fuels.

Remembering Ty (Tyrone) Douglas: The Motor City Super Groups

by Kenny Smith

Hollywood (IFS) - Being a relative “newcomer” to Hollywood, CA in 1974, and just coming out of the military and Vietnam, left me very drained, but motivated at the same time to restart my music career.  Working with Glenn MacArthur at Glenn Records in Palmdale, CA, I managed to fall back into my old habits, just like I did when I was in college.  That drive from the Antelope Valley to Hollywood Boulevard in the middle of day — was only a 40 minute trip.  These days, my friends tell that trip is now two (2) hours each way — everyday.  No matter what time it is, except at 4:30 in the morning.

However, I start to wonder away from my thoughts — almost;  Remembering Ty Douglas was a moment in time when Motown was moving its’ total operations to Hollywood.  I was an independent record promoter for ABC Records, and promoting a couple of records that were going nowhere.

I had to drop by the office and in the lobby was Lee Rogers, Jimmy Holliday and Ty Douglas, all waiting to see then record promotions’ god of the westcoast, Hose Wilson.  It was magic to meet all of these giants in one spot.   Ty Douglas is not well know on his own name recognition, but with the groups he have recorded and performed with is outstanding.  Douglas was riding the wave with “The Bells” written by Marvin Gaye and the Originals, the last of the motor city super groups were breaking up and Douglas was looking for another gig to keep him there in Hollywood.  When the boys of Detriot got together for a party; they could out party the real party-players in their time.  Douglas’ next appointment would take him to another level, as Holland-Dozier-Holland was in a major fight with Motown and was getting ready to start their own recording company.

The many years on the road and the traveling to the westcoast really didn’t set well with Douglas, but as time would have it, he new group –Eight’s Day — would rocket up the charts keeping Douglas close to the collar and in Los Angeles for another period of time.

Douglas was a very kind and caring person who loved the music business and loved singing.  He would tell me, that he had found the easiest ‘gig’ he could have ever enjoyed.  The girls really loved his vocals.  Starting out with Lee Rogers as a member of the Barons and Peppermints, these gentlemen went on to carve their own paths in the music business.  After a couple of beers, Douglas and Rogers would be out in the back of the yard just harmonizing various vocal parts, just like back in the day.  It was always a ‘vocal’ contest with those two guys, and it was fun to be there just to hear the ideas and the arrangments that would send you off to the piano with a song in your heart.

Remembering Motown’s Soul groups - By Chris Rizik
=================================================

While spending most of their existence in the shadow of Motown’s biggest acts, the Originals had a brief shining moment and a couple now-classic songs that will forever secure their place in Soul Music history.

At their prime consisting of bass singer/songwriter Freddie Gorman (most noted for his composition “Please Mr. Postman” for the Marvelettes), falsetto singer Tyrone Hunter, tenors C.P. Spencer and Hank Dixon, and baritone Walter Gaines, the group broke out in 1970 after several years as a 2nd tier Motown group.  Their vehicle was an absolutely beautiful ballad written by labelmate Marvin Gaye, “Baby I’m For Real.” The song’s arrangement and the group’s performance were both perfect, and it became an instant soul classic that quickly topped the Soul charts.  Gaye helped the following year with a successful sequel, the similarly strong “The Bells.”  However, while similar help from Stevie Wonder (“It’s a Shame”) gave the Spinners the foundation for a sterling 20 year chart career, the Originals’ star fell quickly after the two hits.  Their visibility within Motown decreased when the label moved to Los Angeles and the Originals chose to stay in Detroit.  Though they landed a couple more Soul top 20 hits in 1971 (“We Can Make It Baby” and “God Bless Whoever Sent You”), it would be a half decade and a move to the West coast before the Originals would again have a hit, as the group reemerged as a disco act in 1976 with the hit “Down to Love Town.”  They left Motown in the late 70s and signed with Fantasy Records, where they scored a minor dance hit with a remake of the 50’s hit “Blue Moon.”

The Originals ceased recording by 1981 and, after a brief comeback in Europe as part of Ian Levine’s Motorcity Recordings project in 1982, broke up.  Hunter died, but the remainder of the group reunited from time to time to play the oldies circuit, mostly in Europe.  Gorman died on June 13, 2006 at age 67.

Andrew Hamilton Review of the Barons/Peppermints -  All Music Guide
=================================================

The Barons were an early-’60s Detroit group more famous for its members (Roger Craton aka Lee Rogers, Tyrone Douglas, and Jesse Greer) than any accomplishment on their own whose records, due to limited pressings, are rare.

As the Peppermints, they cut three for Carmen C. Murphy’s H.O.B. Records (House of Beauty Records). The House of Beauty, a hair boutique/candy shop, was a female hangout frequented by Raynoma Liles-Gordy (Berry Gordy’s second wife). Motown’s Rayber Singers first label credit was on H.O.B.’s first release, an up-tempo sound by Herman Griffin, “I Need You” in 1958; Griffin later cut non-charting singles on both Tamla and Motown Records, and later married Mary Wells.

Gordy and Murphy were partners on Griffin’s release (this was before Gordy started his own label) but Gordy ended the association after the single floundered. H.O.B. affiliated with Mike Hanks’ D-Town/Mah/Wheelsville setup, and Berry and Raynoma started Tamla Records.  H.O.B. issued “Doing All Right” credited to the Peppermints with the flip “Don’t Take, Give” credited to Katie Blue & the Peppermints.

A second offering “I’m So Glad” b/w “Yours Is My Heart Alone” (1959) was issued as Jack Sucrell & the Contours (not the Motown group); a final single in 1960 featured two sides credited as the Peppermints: “Teenage Idol” b/w “Believe Me.” The flashy, well respected group was going nowhere with H.O.B. so they signed with Soul Records (not the Motown label) for two more stiffs credited this time to the Barons: “Money Don’t Grow on Trees” b/w “Dog Eat Dog” and “While the Cats Away” b/w “Who’s in the Shack,” both in 1961.

Not wasting a moment they cut two final releases in 1961 on Spartan Records: “I’ve Been Hurt” b/w “Willow Weep for Me” and “I Miss You So” b/w “Money Don’t Grow on Trees.” Nothing sold and Craton became Lee Rogers on Mike Hanks’ labels but only could muster small hits like “Sad Affair” and “I Want You to Have Everything.” Jesse Greer delved into songwriting for Correc-tone Records and other entities with little success. Tyrone Douglas’ career was the busiest and most fruitful, but nobody knows him cause he sang with groups who members weren’t well known.

Douglas sang with the Magictones then Eight Day on Holland, Dozier & Holland’s Invictus label; he joined the Undisputed Truth in 1973 and recorded with them on Motown and Whitfield Records reuniting with Magictones’ Tyrone Berkeley, Virginia McDonald, and Calvin Stevens; McDonald also sang with Douglas in Eight Day.

Clarke, Emerson & Sifakis named 2007 A.M. Turing Award Laureates

ACM has named Edmund M. Clarke, E. Allen Emerson, and Joseph Sifakis the recipients of the 2007 A.M. Turing Award for their original and continuing research in a quality assurance process known as Model Checking.

Their innovations transformed the approach from a theoretical technique to a highly effective verification technology that enables computer hardware and software engineers to find errors efficiently in complex system designs, thus increasing the assurance that the systems perform as intended by the designers.

Clarke of Carnegie Mellon University, and Emerson of the University of Texas at Austin, working together, and Sifakis, working independently for the Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique at the University of Grenoble in France, developed this fully automated approach that is now the most widely used verification method in the hardware and software industries.

The Turing Award, first presented in 1966, and named for British mathematician Alan M. Turing, is widely considered the “Nobel Prize in Computing.” It carries a $250,000 prize, with financial support provided by Intel Corporation and Google Inc.

Two of the founding fathers’ and mother was Kenneth Howard Smith and Sandra C. Joseph. As the board of directors grew, Smith and Joseph was placed at odds with the other members and were voted off the board. Upon their leaving, the board did vote to award them PhD’s as Doctors of Theology in the School of Letters. Smith never pursuited starting another school. It was his dream that went to someone else.

Denver - (IFS) - Last year, the recording industry released over 160 million cd’s worldwide. In the USA, the number has been around 78 million releases for commerical markets. Out of that market, D-Town Records placed in the top 10 million cds that were played around the world. As of January 1, 2008, D-Town Records Imprint Division will only release its music as digital downloads. D-Town’s switch to just digital downloads is assocaited with the rising costs of shipping and that the mom and pop music stores are not selling as much product.

Marketing tips and self-promotion
ideas for indie music people just
like you — since 1995

February 19, 2008

This issue is all about feedback. No, not
screeching frequencies through speakers. I’m
talking about comments and opinions. I’ll show
you one thing that I received but mainly I want
your thoughts on two important items below.
Please read and respond. I welcome your input.

What Do YOU Want in a Music Conference?

As you may know, I’ll be presenting the first
Indie Buzz Bootcamp music conference June 20-22
in my hometown of St. Louis, MO. If you’ve read
my early description of it, you also know that
I want to make this a weekend workshop event
unlike any other in existence today.

Derek Sivers (of CD Baby), NYC music publicist
Ariel Hyatt, Nashville singer and music career
coach Nancy Moran, and I are the scheduled
speakers, with more to be announced soon.

While I have some definite ideas about how I want
to present this life-changing event (solo speakers
instead of panels, a focus on education and action
plans instead of showcases and parties, etc.) I’d
love to get your thoughts on what you’d like to
see in a music conference.

Please consider the following questions:

  • What’s been missing from the music conferences
    you’ve attended in the past?
  • What would you really like to see in a weekend
event dedicated to indie music career success?
  • What topics would you like to see covered?
  • Who would you like to hear speak?
  • What factors would motivate you to attend?

To send me your answers you can either go to
this blog entry and click the comments link to
post your responses. Or simply reply to this
email.

Thanks in advance for giving me your honest
feedback. I’ll give consideration to all the
responses and incorporate the ones that make
the most sense.

Note #1: You can still register to win a pair of
fr-ee admissions to the Indie Buzz Bootcamp here.

I’ll announce the winners by March 10, and
tickets will go on sale March 17. Everyone who
registers for the drawing will be first in line
to purchase tickets at an early discounted rate
before they go on sale to the public.

Note #2: If you’re on Facebook, I have an event
page for the conference here.

The Coolest Email I’ve Ever Received

“Bob, I found you in 2004 when doing a web search.
I have read your blog, watched your video clips,
purchased your e-books, and look at you as a
mentor. Since then, we have been played on over
500 Internet, commercial and college radio
stations around the world, all with your help.
We have had Top 10 songs in some of the biggest
cities
using your advice and, right now, have
two songs in the Top 10 national jazz charts in
Australia!

“Using your advice, we got signed to Rhombus
Records in Los Angeles last year and, as a
result, made it to the second round of voting
for a Grammy Award in the Best New Jazz/Fusion
Artist category
. It’s funny, you were our manager
for the past four years and took us from not
knowing business to guiding our careers to this
point … and you never even knew it. Thank you,
Bob, and may you help others like us in the
future.”

-Terry Copley, Catz in the Hatz,
www.myspace.com/catzinthehatz

Thanks, Terry. Congrats on your success! YOU
earned it. You may have fallen a little short
of an official Grammy nomination this year, but
you’re a BIG winner in my book. I wish you
continued success!

Could You Use a Music Success Coach?

There are many ways to learn and grow and move
closer to your vision of music success. Some
people develop their skills by reading books
and listening to audio programs. Some get
inspired by attending workshops and other live
events.

And some prefer to take things a step further
and work one on one with someone who will
encourage them, listen, offer advice, and hold
them accountable
to the goals they’ve set.

If you’ve ever taken a guitar, piano or vocal
lesson, you know first hand what this process
is like.

More and more people are approaching me to act
as a mentor or coach for them. But the available
time I have for projects like this is virtually
nonexistent
. So I have to turn people away, and
this has always bothered me.

But a recent conversation with indie artist John
Taglieri opened my eyes to another possibility.
What if I could set up a system that allows me
to pair up my readers with a coach that I know
and trust? Someone who could motivate and guide
aspiring artists to set and reach their goals.

John not only suggested the idea, but offered
himself up as my first officially sanctioned
coach. And he’s the perfect man for the job.
I’ve featured John in three of my books, and we
even teamed up on an audio program called “How
to Make a Living as a Full-Time Indie Musician
.”

John has sold more than 12,000 CDs over the past
several years, tours, teaches, and more. He’s
got an indie music career work ethic like no one
I’ve ever met. I knew right away he’d be ideal
for this type of work.

I haven’t set up a page for this yet or finalized
the fee structure, but I wanted to throw this out
there and start collecting the names of potentially
interested parties.

Would you like to learn more about having John
Taglieri coach you? If so, reply to this email
and change the subject line to “Coaching Info.”
If there’s enough interest and we decide to
launch the service, you’ll be the first to know.

“I now live in the richest 3rd world country, in the world”, says Smith

Denver (IFS) - Kenny Smith’s release of the first songs back in 1964, with clips of Florence Oggs, Brenda Smith on keyboards singing a spirited version of the gospel standard “99 and 1/2 Won’t Do”, and the “Purple Olive Theme” with Buddy Wampler on bass, Terry Lambright of guitar and Rick Perrine of drums.  These recordings circa 1965.  Other than that, it’s a collection of sounds and little pieces in time.  DDR is releasing CD digital only.

A little about our Politics; at my age, I get elected as a delegate to the convention.  How about that!   Next, talking to my friend and spiritual advisor, Sandra C. Jospeh, we wonder how we got to this place in time.   ”…I now find myself living in the richest 3rd world country, in the world.  God best America.  Please!” - K. Smith, 2008

Marketing tips and self-promotion
ideas for indie music people just
like you — since 1995

February 12, 2008

As you read this, I’m flying back to St. Louis
from San Diego, where I attended a great Ultimate
Life Workshop weekend seminar with Jack Canfield
and Jim Bunch. Awesome experience!

You can be sure I’ll share some of what I learned
in future ezines and blog posts, and incorporate
some of these profound techniques into the Indie
Buzz Bootcamp event I’ll present in June (details
at www.IndieBuzzBootcamp.com).

Enjoy this latest ezine issue …

How to Create Something Worth Paying for
in the No-Cost Digital Age

Technology writer Kevin Kelly wrote a great blog
post that I encourage you to read. He starts it
off by saying “The Internet is a copy machine.”
The basic idea here is that digital files can be
so easily stored, copied and shared online, they
often lose their value.

That’s certainly not news to musicians. Ever
since the early days of Napster we’ve known that
MP3 files flow freely when they can be easily
accessed. That’s why a lot of artists are now
thinking of digital music files as a promotional
tool only and finding other ways to earn a living.

That’s where Kelly’s ideas may help. He says,
“When copies don’t cost anything, you need to
sell things that cannot be copied.” He lists
eight ways to do that.

Here’s one I really enjoyed:

Patronage — It is my belief that audiences WANT
to pay creators. Fans like to reward artists,
musicians, authors and the like with the tokens
of their appreciation, because it allows them to
connect. But they will only pay if it is very
easy to do, a reasonable amount, and they feel
certain the money will directly benefit the
creators.

“Radiohead’s recent high-profile experiment in
letting fans pay them whatever they wished for
a copy is an excellent illustration of the power
of patronage. The elusive, intangible connection
that flows between appreciative fans and the
artist is worth something.”

I love that idea and agree wholeheartedly. That’s
why it’s more important than ever to establish
strong bonds with your fans
, to build a mailing
list, to be accessible, and to create a community
of like-minded people around the theme of your
songs and personality.

Read Kevin Kelly’s entire blog post here.

What They’re Saying About …

“I just finished listening to ‘How to Make a
Living as a Full-Time Indie Musician
‘ and wanted
to drop you and John a note to say thanks. I was
a little skeptical at first. I’ve purchased
several self-help audio programs and typically
find them long on feel-good generalities and
short on specifics. After listening to yours,
I’m happy to say it’s a lot of value for the
money. It was interesting, well paced and had
a lot of helpful information for an indie like
me. I’d say it’s one of the best music-related
resources I’ve bought to date.”
-Lance Gallup, www.lancegallup.com

“‘Guerrilla Music Marketing, Encore Edition‘ is
an essential tool for any artist pursuing a
career in music, especially in today’s
dramatically changing marketplace.”
-Ritch Esra, Music Business Registry,
www.musicregistry.com

“I just wanted to let you know that I already
feel like the money I spent on your ‘Music PR
Hot List
‘ was worth every penny. I’m beginning
to get the word out and generate an online buzz
now. Thanks for your advice and optimism. I find
it truly refreshing and empowering.”
-Mark Freifeld

Music Recording Industry Will Be First Traditional Media Industry To Be Utterly Destroyed By Digital Technology

by Scott Karp

The maxim goes that new technologies don’t kill off old media — radio didn’t kill newspapers, TV didn’t kill radio, etc. But it’s not clear this maxim will hold true in the digital age. The first industry to suffer the slings and arrows of digital technology was the music recording industry, back when MP3s and Napster gave birth to digital music sharing. Now it seems likely that if digital technology is capable of utterly destroying an old media industry, the music recording industry will be its first victim.

In a desperate, senseless, lunatic attempt to save the collapse of their business, the recording industry has declared jihad on their own consumers — trying to literally to sue their customers back into the stone age. This war on consumers has taken a bizarre and potentially fatal twist as the music recording industry has declared it illegal to to copy legally purchased music to a computer for personal use.

Yes, you read that right:

Now, in an unusual case in which an Arizona recipient of an RIAA letter has fought back in court rather than write a check to avoid hefty legal fees, the industry is taking its argument against music sharing one step further: In legal documents in its federal case against Jeffrey Howell, a Scottsdale, Ariz., man who kept a collection of about 2,000 music recordings on his personal computer, the industry maintains that it is illegal for someone who has legally purchased a CD to transfer that music into his computer.

The industry’s lawyer in the case, Ira Schwartz, argues in a brief filed earlier this month that the MP3 files Howell made on his computer from legally bought CDs are “unauthorized copies” of copyrighted recordings.

And you thought you actually owned the digital bits on the CD you bought. No, silly. The recording industry owns them. Who knows if you even have the right to listen to the music when you have friends over. Maybe they all need to bring their own copies. Maybe you need to buy a copy for each room of your house, or one for listening in the morning and one for listening in the evening, or…

Un-frigging-believable.

The implication of course is that virtually every individual who owns both a CD and a computer — and thus has likely copied that CD to the computer — can be subject to a lawsuit by the recording industry. Imagine the revenue potential from suing hundreds of millions of people, i.e. suing every one of your customers.

Is it possible for an industry to develop a business model based entirely on litigation?

More likely is that both consumers and recording artists alike will continue to abandon major record labels at an accelerating rate, causing at least one major label to declare bankruptcy and shut down, perhaps even in the next 12-24 months.

There is a simple, if cliched lesson in the recording industry’s bizarre death spiral, which every media company needs to carefully note:

CHANGE OR DIE

“Change” means that you should assume, worst case, that everything you know is wrong, that nothing that has worked in the past will continue to work, that complacency and resistance to change = failure, and that anyone who doesn’t get with whatever the new program is needs to be show the door as quickly as possible.

Of course that’s stating it in the extreme, but never has the disruption of technology moved so rapidly and with such extreme impact as it has in the media industry.

Don’t become the buggy whip — or the music recording industry — of the digital age.
